North Georgia Railroad
was formed in May, 2004 as an O Gauge scale model railroad
loosely depicting the actual railroad and scenery of North Georgia
in and around the towns of Jasper, Tate and Talking Rock
Georgia. In addition, North Georgia Railroad combines many
other features of North Georgia within the
beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains. North Georgia Railroad features the small
towns of Jasper, Tate, and Talking
Rock, Georgia, plus the Marble
Quarry of Tate,
Georgia, and highlights the communities of Bent
Tree and Big
Canoe all within Pickens County. North Georgia
Railroad also prominently highlights the Amicalola Falls in Dawson County and Sky Valley Ski
Resort in Rabun County in Northeast Georgia.
Tate, GA - Train
Depot
North Georgia Railroad runs four trains on a
regular schedule. Three passenger trains and one freight train. Two
passenger trains run a year round schedule and one
a seasonal schedule, during the winter months to accommodate
the ski slopes of Sky Valley. The freight train is primarily used
for the extensive marble industry in and around Tate, but is also used for the timber industry
in the area as well as several smaller businesses. The names of the
two year round trains are "The Spotted Bear Express"
and "The Scenic Falls
Limited" and the seasonal passenger train is
"The Powder Ridge
Special". Our single freight train is named
"The Matrix Mountain Marble
Mine". A separate Electronic Rail Pass is
available for each train.
The actual railroad running thru Pickens County was initially
chartered in Georgia as The Ellijay
Railroad in 1854, seven years before the Civil War. The railroad was
completed from Marietta to Canton and
train service began there in 1879. The name was then changed to
the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad
Company. It took until 1883, for the railroad to reach Jasper, by 1884 it reached Ellijay and then by
1886 Blue Ridge and Mineral Bluff.
Today the railroad is known as the Georgia Northeastern Railroad.
